About Club
The seeds of the Rotary club in the fast growing industrial suburb Akurdi were first sown by PP Nana
Damle when he proposed this idea in the Board of Directors meeting of the Rotary Club of Chinchwad
in April 2006. It was unanimously accepted and Nana was appointed GSR. Due to the tireless efforts and
enormous amount of follow up the prospective club members for the first time met in Hotel Bhola when
the then DG Dr Mahesh gave his blessings for the formation of the club.
Though the initial membership required for chartering is 20. Nana went on collecting more and more
persons full of youth and energy and in the month of July the number of prospective members grew to 50.
The club started having its regular meetings in Hotel Stafi, Chinchwad on Sunday mornings. During the
DG's (Rtn Hariprasad Somani) visit to Chinchwad club in June, The then President Rtn Satish Ambekar
proposed the name of Rtn C P Chandrasekaran a member of his club as the Charter president of the
proposed club of Rotary Club of Akurdi. The DG gave his approval and the club started functioning with
a nascent board of Directors. Rtn Gul Sewlani who had previous experience with another NGO became
the Charter Secretary.
The membership stood at a record number of 55 when the papers were sent to Rotary international for
charter and on 6th September, 2006, we got the charter. The glittering function was arranged to celebrate
it on 8th October 2006 and in the function marked the handing over of the charter to the Charter
president in the august company of the then DG, PDG and various other dignitaries of the Rotary
District 3130.
The club had a unique flavour of having the youthful entrepreneurial membership. It had thus taken up a
clear innovative path whether it is the Hemophilia project or the Jal dindi project. It adopted the motto
“Service with devotion and valour” and installed the icon of Sant Tukaram and Chatrapthi Shivaji in its
banner. The joint project of construction of a toilet block for the primary school in Bebewadi near Urse
in Talegaon with participation from Tata Motors Limited. Some of the initial projects taken up had a
long term view and the medical help to Mother Teresa and the help for the Chess championship for
children or the member satisfaction survey are a few examples. The DG's visit during the first year was
on 5th April 2007 and he was very happy on seeing the report of the activities.
On 8th July 2007, Rtn Jeetendra Sharma took over as the President and started the year with a clear
direction and purpose which was visible in projects like the eye donation camp organized with the help
from Pune Police. Rtn Sanjeev Khinvasara became the Secretary .Under their leadership, the formation
of club trust was started . The club also got noticed in the district through the attractively printed news
letters and the new website. The new members have been added steadily and the assimilation of the new
members has been smooth. The Project of computer Literacy at the Nigdi school for deaf and dumb ably
started by Rtn Manish and supported by Ann Rashmi has drawn very good appreciation from all.
Similarly, the project at blind school was also good examples of focused community projects.
With this good start, Rotary club of Akurdi is entering the third year with the President Elect Rtn Gul
poised to take the leadership and and eminent Doctor Rtn Shrirang as the secretary..
We the members of the club together will continue our path of service with devotion and valour.
